WEBINAR: Food Supplements Special Interest Group (SIG) – a focus on Vitamin D

Tuesday 14 July 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm BST

Join us online for our next Food Supplements Special Interest Group (SIG) to hear about how Vitamin D continues to be a nutrient that dominates the media headlines, whether due to nutritional deficiency, national guidelines to supplement or as a panacea for good health.
We invite you to hear some of the facts around Vitamin D, with our speaker Steve Simbler, a pharmacist who has more than 20 years’ experience in medicines management in sport. Steve is the Head of the Sports Division at Synergy Biologics, who have Pro D3 within their portfolio. Steve has a professional view to share about Vitamin D and its role in supplementation in all our lives.

– Does vitamin D fall into the category of what we classically know as a vitamin?
– What is the best form of vitamin D for us, and how much and how often do we need it?
– What is the best/safest way for us to obtain vitamin D?
– What does it actually mean when we are vitamin D deficient/insufficient/sufficient, and what can go wrong if our levels are low?
– Is the attitude to vitamin D the same globally, and in particular what are the UK recommendations?
– What are the ramifications of recent government directives reducing NHS access to maintenance doses of vitamins?
– Why are professional athletes often taking higher dosages of vitamin D?

As well as the opportunity to hear some facts about Vitamin D you can take part in a question and answer session.

Speaker Profiles

Steve Simbler MRPharm.S, Head of Sports Division, Synergy Biologics

Steve has been working as a pharmacist in elite sport for over 20 years, initially in a supply capacity, and for the past 10 years in providing medicines management consultancy and software to teams in the Premier League and English Football League as well as national governing bodies for football, rugby, athletics, tennis, cricket, rowing, and cycling amongst others.
He was one of the lead pharmacists for the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, then again for the London 2017 Athletics and Para-Athletics World Championships.
As well as giving talks about vitamin D, he lectures on various topics pertaining to drugs in sport and the use of analgesics and anti-inflammatories in sport.
In 2006, sport doctors approached Steve to advise on obtaining a reliable source of vitamin D that could pass tests for WADA-prohibited substances, this prompted an association with Synergy Biologics, makers of Pro D3, and this relationship is ongoing, and stimulated an interest in vitamin D on which he keeps abreast of research, and reads extensively.
Since 2016 Steve has been a pharmacist panel member for the General Pharmaceutical Council’s Fitness to Practise Committee, and has recently started as an NHS Test and Trace clinical contact tracer on a part time basis.
