Project title: Resuscitation VR training simulation – adaptation for international localisation Month/year May 2023

The background to the case study / Storyboarding
Having spun out of AiSolve, i3 Simulations brings intuitive, interactive, and immersive (i3) training simulations to help with the growing business needs of remote/virtual training.

The challenge / trigger event / the service, product or project in question
Doctors are regularly faced with high-stress situations, and their decisions are often crucial to the patient’s life. For a trainee or junior doctor in emergency medicine, hands-on experience of trauma will depend on the case load that arrives at A&E and gaining experience in specific processes places the doctor in high-risk situations.

With Resuscitation VR (virtual reality), the medical training experience is going through a cutting-edge transformation. Resuscitation VR gives users simulations of scenarios to practice and refine their critical decision making in a safe and intuitive environment. Being a scalable framework to train doctors and medical staff for emergency situations through an immersive audio-visual experience, Resuscitation VR is a cost-effective training solution. This better equips medical practitioners to tackle situations where the stakes are high.

This project entails the international localisation of one of their VR medical training modules, Resuscitation VR, developed in partnership with Facebook and Children Hospital Los Angeles in 2017.

The current product is market-ready for the USA, but not for other countries. At the moment, the Spanish market is being considered as there is both an interest in the use of medical VR and a potential large market for the transition.

Beyond requiring language translation, the VR modules also require cultural adaptation to be in line with country-specific communication customs in the healthcare space, as well as relevant updates to adapt to local medical practices and subsequent validation from subject matter experts for training medical students.

The solution
Through the ACTIS project, i3 Simulations met with an Innovation Advisor, who worked with them to identify the best way adapt their technology for the international market. It was identified that the following tasks would need to be completed in order for this to happen:

·        Script translation to Spanish.

·        Cultural communication adaptation.

·        New country medical praxis rewriting.

·        Text-to-Voice services to create support audio files.

·        IT integration of current USA module with new country-specific characteristics.

·        Testing.

·        Subject Matter Expert validation to sign-off.

Medilink Midlands was able to utilise its knowledge and experience to find and recommend various appropriate funding streams and relevant industry events and conferences. As part of the support offered by the ACTIS project, i3 Simulations was also able to apply for and receive a specialist networking grant, to assist with further relevant conferences.

The results / evaluation
The product is now delivered to more than 80 organisations in over 20 countries and continues to actively evolve through further research and content development. Furthermore, they have delivered additional projects in North America, multiple contracts in Singapore, have gained traction and sales through localisation and research in Europe and are forming relationships and small pilot projects in the UK/NHS.

i3 Simulations plans to maintain this momentum to raise a series A investment in 2023. In the next 2 to 3 years, they want to focus on North America, Europe and Singapore as primary markets and are aiming for increased penetration of these markets via scaling their content offering and in-house technology capabilities.

Medilink Midlands’s role/Quote from the company
“i3 Simulations is building up a re-usable content library for 3D simulations and is establishing a consistent methodology to perform requirements gathering, evaluate simulation software and evaluate trainee performance. Through the use of AI and machine learning, i3 is gradually approaching the point where much of the process of 3D simulation development can be automated, allowing its products to be far more cost-effective and customisable. As part of our growth and expansion, it is only natural that we should look to grow internationally. ACTIS support has been a vital part of this and without the support we received, we wouldn’t be in such a strong position now.” Devi Kolli, CEO.

Medilink Midlands’s role/Quote from the Advisor
“Medilink has strong international connections. With our existing partnerships with the City of Mentor, Ohio, and our close working with Wallonia, Belgium, we understand that life sciences is very much a global industry. With this comes the need to adapt technologies to fit in each country in which they are sold. We were glad to support i3 Simulations, and we anticipate that they will continue to expand and succeed with their innovative approach to resuscitation training.” Teresa Smith, Innovation Advisor.
