Patrons, members, stakeholders and industry specialists were all welcomed at this year’s Medilink Midlands’ Innovation Day. Held at DoubleTree by Hilton in Coventry on the 5th October, the event played host to over 250 guests, presenters and exhibitors all eager to network and engage.
Digital sponsors Coventry University, provided, as part of their sponsorship, an immersive digital app to enable guests to interact with, and provide questions to and for, the host, Sue Saville and the various keynote speakers. Silverstone Technology Cluster (STC), the not-for-profit industry support organisation for advanced engineering, electronics, and software businesses, also lent their support by sponsoring the expo and networking.
The conference was hosted by Sue Saville, former Medical Correspondent for ITV News. Speakers included Dr Roger Mendonça, CEO of Midlands Engine who discussed the importance of partnerships in unlocking the potential of the Midlands’ life sciences sector, and Jennifer Hill, Innovation, Research, and Life Sciences Lead at the NHS Innovation Service, who explained how the new service will accelerate innovative solutions for the NHS.
One of the most unusual and engaging presentations was made by one of the youngest Life Sciences CEO’s, Olivia Simpson of SymbioTex, who extolled the virtues of the multiple uses of seaweed in tackling medical plastic waste. Olivia reported that the company is even looking into the use of seaweed as a replacement for the plastic inhaler!
Outside of the conference, a dedicated exhibition area hosted 37 different organisations who work with, and in, the life sciences sector.
Unfortunately, Medilink Midlands’ CEO was unable to attend, however of the event, Melanie Davidson comments : “Innovation Day sits proudly within our annual events programme as the flagship event of the year for those in the life sciences and medtech sectors. Centrally located, the event brings together academics, clinicians, and businesses from across the Midlands to forge partnerships, share ideas, and gain insights into topics such as NHS access, business support, and expanding markets.
“The 2023 event will provide guests with the chance to see the strength of the Midlands life sciences sector first hand and allow businesses to learn about opportunities for innovation and business support to accelerate their growth.”

With thanks to our Expo and Networking Sponsor – Silverstone Technology Cluster
The Silverstone Technology Cluster (STC) was founded to help companies in and around Silverstone make money, increase their profits and grow. We are not-for-profit, industry and technology agnostic and – through our members – we increase the value of the local economy.
Brought into being back in 2017, the STC’s creation was the result of a call to action by a report* which identified our region (within an hour’s drive of Silverstone) as an integral part of the Oxford – Milton Keynes – Cambridge Super Cluster, and our membership has been going from strength to strength ever since.
From the seven original founding members, membership numbers now exceed 150 businesses, and our numerous, regular events take place all over the region. The STC is a real community and its members are now attracting interest not only locally and internationally but also from the likes of the UK government, Heathrow Airport, US DEVCOM, UKSA, and BAE Systems among others.
Our focus is on promotion of our members and their capabilities, support of those members wherever they find themselves and a thought leadership agenda which aims to help the motivated and ambitious business stretch its potential and exceed in its field.
Meet the team from Silverstone Technology Cluster at their exhibition stand, stand number 35.

Olivia SimpsonCEO & Founder, SymbioTex Olivia is the founder of SymbioTex, an innovative company pioneering sustainable solutions to tackle single-use plastics in healthcare. While on placement in the NHS, Olivia witnessed first-hand the vast amount of medical plastic waste generated, with over 60 million inhalers distributed in the UK each year and only 0.5% ever being recycled. SymbioTex has developed a patented technology which it aims to license to manufacturers, enabling them to switch to a sustainable raw material which can be injection moulded to create compostable medical devices. They are initially targeting products like gallipots, sharp bin lids and cosmetic pots. Rather than using plastics, SymbioTex’s material is made from renewable seaweed that sequesters carbon as it grows. Unlike bioplastics, their material is home compostable, creates no harmful by-products when disposed of and does not compete with land used for food crops. Olivia’s innovative solution has already achieved significant success, winning the Version & Unloc Young Entrepreneur Challenge 2023 and wining the London Tech Week Elevating Founders competition, and Innovate UK funding. SymbioTex and its founder Olivia Simpson have been selected as finalists in the Great British Entrepreneur Awards 2023.
