Greater reassurance is being given to NHS front-line staff and patients, as the UK’s first fully accredited Life Science Industry register has joined forces with Medical Industry Ltd’s Medical Industry Accredited system (MIA).

The Life Science Industry register is the first of its kind and sets national standards for Life Science industry staff who interact with NHS front-line staff and patients. This is the only register which is Professional Standards Authority (PSA) accredited and already has 1000 individuals going through the registration process. From July 2019, the University Hospitals of Birmingham will be the first trust to formally begin using the register as their primary method of accreditation.

Medilink UK is one of eight national industry associations which has been working with the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) to develop a fit for purpose credentialing environment, in the form of the Life Science Industry register. The new collaboration between LSI and MIA will combine the robust governance required of a PSA accredited register with MIA’s operational functionality and appointment systems, from 30th July this year (2019).

The new scheme will continue to operate on a not-for-profit basis, focused on delivering the triple aims of patient safety, health system efficiency and minimising industry cost and bureaucracy. It will be followed by a phase-in period where the MIA and LSI schemes will operate in tandem, giving registrants of both schemes time to migrate onto the new combined Life Science Industry National Credentialing Register powered by MIA.
