Three life science companies from across the Midlands have won national awards in recognition of their excellent work.

Spirit Healthcare, Tutum Medical and Powerbreathe International Limited were all nominated for the national Medilink UK awards, which took place earlier this month. The companies were nominated in the Advances in Digital Healthcare, Delivering Innovation into Health and Care, and Export categories, respectively. Each of the above companies won in their category at the regional Medilink Midlands Business Awards in January of this year, and are Medilink Midlands Members.

Medilink Midlands is the Midlands Life Science Industry organisation, focused on connectivity, collaboration, serving our members and supporting businesses to establish develop and grow. Working with key strategic partners across the midlands including the Midlands Engine to develop shared strategy across the region.

Over 200 industry professionals gathered to celebrate the winners of these prestigious awards. The sold-out, three-course dinner was held at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, with entertainment throughout and complete with celebrity host Paul Sinha (ITV’s The Chase). This year’s awards recognised a multitude of achievements and outstanding contributions to life sciences. The night saw 14 winners in total, alongside 24 projects and organisations recognised who were highly commended.

Spirit Health, which won the Advances in Digital Healthcare award, is one of the fastest-growing companies in the UK, developing innovative products and services that empower people to take control of their own health. Spirit Health combine health and social care experience with technological brilliance to deliver CliniTouch Vie, their innovative digital health platform powering virtual wards and remote patient monitoring. The group has been recognised as one of technology’s 50 Best Companies to Work For in 2021, as well as being named in the UK’s top 100 best mid-sized companies.

Tutum Medical, which won the Delivering Innovation into Health and Care Award, is a spin-out company from TBG Solutions – an engineering company providing test capability on manufactured products to large corporate companies. Their R&D department works in collaboration with prime customers for trials and analysis of results before going live to the market. TUTUM Medical was created as a result of one of these collaborative projects with Sheffield Children’s Hospital. TUTUM Medical focuses on partnering with NHS organisations to solve problems and improve patient care.

POWERbreathe International Limited, which won the Export award, has developed inspiratory muscle training, which has been scientifically proven to strengthen your breathing muscles and is often dubbed as being like a ‘set of dumbbells for your diaphragm’. In 2021, POWERbreathe was recognized by the WHO as being beneficial for the recovery of Covid-19. A major clinical trial study published by the University of Colorado showed that the use of POWERbreathe IMT can help to lower blood-pressure, reducing heart attack risk as well as boosting cognitive & physical performance. POWERbreathe now has over 30 distributors worldwide.

Chris Barker, CEO Spirit Healthcare, said: “We are so proud of the work our family and partners have done and continue to do to make health easy for patients and healthcare professionals. Well done to all the winners making a difference in healthcare and thanks to Medilink Midlands for celebrating them. A special well done to the Spirit family – you are all brilliant.”

Paul Rawlinson, Managing Director of Tutum Medical Ltd said: “Winning this award is fantastic and a worthy accolade to everyone involved in developing the unique BEAMS monitoring system. I would especially like to thank Sheffield Children’s Hospital who initially approached us to develop this system for them, and to Professor Derek Burke and Sue Ievers who have been outstanding in their support and encouragement at the hospital.”

Duncan Kerr, Training Manager at POWERbreathe, said: “POWERbreathe International Limited exports POWERbreathe breathing trainers across the world. We are able to do this successfully with the additional benefit of our network of distributors. Our distributors are important members of our POWERbreathe family. And, it is with great pride that we accept this Export Achievement Business Award which we share with our family of distributors.”
