Company name: Personal Care Packs Ltd Contact name & Job Title Sujata Bhalla
Project title: Patient care pack clinical trial Month/year August 2017
Case study writer: Merle Harrison Account Manager Melanie Davidson

The background to the case study
Personal Care Packs custom make patient care packs, bags of single use hygiene items for patients admitted to hospital.  They have a range of packs which support key NHS strategies around patient care and experience e.g. emergency admission packs, sleep well packs and walk safe packs.

The Patient Care Packs are a leading innovation for NHS hospitals, improving patient care and saving public money. The company currently supplies 100,000 patients with individual care packs each year.

Personal Care Packs was established in 2013 and has 1 employee. The company is based in Leicester.

The challenge / trigger event
Patient Care Packs are proven to improve the admission and care experience, saving valuable time for nurses who would otherwise be spending time sourcing items for vulnerable patients.

The company wanted to further expand their offering and carry out a 3 month clinical trial of the care packs in partnership with 5 NHS Trusts across South London. The clinical trial involved working in collaboration with the South London AHSN to promote the product, increase brand awareness and accelerate the innovation with the aim of increasing sales post-clinical trial.

The service required included the purchase of materials to distribute 3,000 customised packs, the fulfilment of clinical trial supplies and the evaluation of clinical trial data and equipment.

The solution
This clinical trial will help to accelerate the innovation with the aim of increasing sales post-trial phase. It will also provide Personal Care Packs with the opportunity to collaborate with the South London AHSN and further promote their products to the South London network of NHS Trusts.

Personal Care Packs were awarded a grant fund of £5,132 for the undertaking of a 3 month clinical trial across 5 NHS Trusts of Patient care packs. This funding was part of the ERDF-funded SoLSTICE programme.

The results / evaluation
The results of this project were:

·       to speed up the collaboration with and reach to the NHS

·       to enable wider access to the product and enhance patient care and experience across a wider region

·       to raise brand awareness and therefore increase sales of the care packs, revenue of which could be reinvested to support further trials with other regional AHSNs

·       Increased profit and job creation

University of Leicester research proves that patient care packs saves nurses more than 40 minutes per shift (1:8 patient ratio), enabling more effective nursing, and saving the NHS £1,705 per band 4 nurse.

Medilink East Midlands’s role
Getting Medilink East Midlands involved has enabled the company to speed up the collaboration with the NHS and to enable wider access to a simple, effective and low-cost method of enhancing patient care and experience.

Other support
Personal Care Packs were awarded with a Medilink East Midlands Business award in 2016, for the Collaboration with the NHS category. By being selected as a finalist and winner for this award, the company benefitted from exposure through Medilink EM’s marketing and PR.
